Q & A about feeds

Q: What is a podcast or an RSS feed and how can I subscribe to it?

A: RSS (an abbreviation for Really Simple Syndication) is a web feed format used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. An RSS document is usually called a "feed" and includes summarized text, plus data such as publishing dates and authorship.

Web feeds are a means to syndicate content automatically. RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader", or "aggregator", which can be web-based, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based. A standardized XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's URL into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds.

Here is a good tutorial to get you up to speed: How do I subscribe to a podcast?

You can access an RSS feed in FireFox, Internet Explorer and other browsers that support RSS. You can also get a program to receive the RSS feed, like iTunes | Juice | Zune (to name a few).

Q: How do I subscribe to the free Red Ice Radio program podcast feed?

A: Click on the RSS button on the top menu or from any of our radio pages. It looks like this:

Once on our RSS page - choose what feed you want to subscribe to, then copy the RSS URL and paste it into the program you use to read the feed as described in the above tutorial.

If you use iTunes (iPod) or Microsoft's Zune Player, you can also use our "One Click Subscribe" options located on our RSS feeds page.

Please note that our RSS feed holds about a year of the free Red Ice Radio program. If you want to listen, stream or download older programs you need to sign up for a membership on redicemembers.com and click into the RSS sectino on the members website and subscribe to those feeds.
