China Orders Recall on 69 Milk Products After Melamine Found
From: bloomberg.com

China's quality-control regulator ordered the recall of 69 infant-milk products made by 22 dairy companies after samples were found to be tainted by melamine.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine ordered the ``immediate'' destruction of the products, it said in a statement on its Web site.

Infant formula contaminated by the industrial chemical has been linked to 1,253 cases of infant kidney stones, killing two.

The quality-control agency said no contamination was found in milk products made after Sept. 14, and that the dairy supply for the Beijing Olympics was untainted by melamine.

The regulator also said government agencies will supervise production of all milk products to ensure quality and safety.

China has 175 infant-milk powder producers, 66 of which have stopped production, the statement said. The regulator investigated the products of the remaining 109 producers, which make 491 infant-milk products, it said.
