As President, Scott Walker Would Overturn Any Iran Deal 'On The First Day'

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, widely seen as a contender for the 2016 Republican nomination for president, said he would reject any agreement the Obama administration signs with Iran on halting its nuclear energy program.

When asked by conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt if he would reject the law, Walker responded, “Absolutely, on Day 1.”

Walker added, “The concept of a nuclear Iran is not only problematic for Iran, and certainly for Israel, but it opens the doors. You’re going to have plenty of others in the region ... They’re going to want to have a nuclear weapon if the Iranians have a nuclear weapon.”

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is currently in Switzerland negotiating with Iran’s leaders over the final details of the talks. The U.S. is looking to reduce Iran’s uranium enrichment program, effectively removing any chance of the hostile nation of producing a nuclear weapon. Iran is asking for heavy sanctions to be removed, as its economy has been crippled over the past few years. The deadline for a final deal is March 31.

Other prominent Republicans have voiced their skepticism over the controversial negotiations. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, another potential Republican presidential candidate, said that he “absolutely” would undo any deal worked out between Kerry and the Iranians. The senator cited his frustration over the Obama administration’s going to the United Nations instead of Congress to discuss the next steps.

“Now, if he brings it to the Congress and can get it passed, that’s a different story,” said Rubio. “He’s indicated that he prefers to take it to the United Nations instead of Congress.”

Walker echoed Rubio’s concerns: “And the fact that this administration began these discussion essentially conceding that they’re going to allow enrichment to go forward with the Iranians just shows you that they don’t have the same level of concern that I think I and Senator Rubio and many others out there have, that a nuclear Iran is a problem for the entire world, not just for Israel.”
