The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street - Welcome to the Twilight Zone
2010 07 07
The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill, and suspicion can destroy, and the thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own: for the children, and the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.
'Killing enthusiast' to replace Petraeus
2010 07 09
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has named James Mattis, a four-star Marine general known for his blunt speech, as the new head of US Central Command. Mattis is an erudite combat veteran known for quoting poetry and openly expressing his enthusiasm for "killing the enemy," Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday. The nomination that was announced on Thursday brought Secretary ...
Wanna Defend the Internet (We Just Might Have To)
2010 07 09
Members of the military's new Cyber Command insist that they've got no interest in taking over civilian Internet security or even in becoming the Pentagon's primary information protectors. But the push to intertwine military and civilian network defenses is gaining momentum, nevertheless. At a gathering this week of top cybersecurity officials and defense contractors, the Pentagon's number two floated ...
Toxic Gas Cloud Sickens Oil Patch Residents
2010 07 08
Richard Langer was working on his farm just outside Peace River, Alta., one morning last spring when he saw the gas cloud drift through. "It was sort of a blue-green cloud," he recalls. The smell a gassy, tarry reek like a hundred roofing crews working at once was bad enough. Then a truck idling in the middle of the cloud ...
Planck telescope reveals ancient cosmic light
2010 07 06
ESA, HFI, and LFI Consortia This is the extraordinary place where we all live - the Universe. The picture is the first full-sky image from Europe's Planck telescope which was sent into space last year to survey the "oldest light" in the cosmos. It took the 600m-euro observatory just over six months to assemble the map. It shows what is visible beyond the ...
UN slams US Dollar, looks to replace it with IMF 'virtual' currency
2010 07 05
The US Dollar - "It's not worth the paper it's not being printed on." ~Gerald Celente "A report by the United Nations says the American dollar should be ditched as the main global reserve currency. It said that the global financial meltdown has exposed systematic weaknesses, one of which is the reliance on the greenback. It also found that developing countries ...
How the Catholic Church Created the Black Death by Eradicating the "Satanic" House Cat
2010 07 05
Studies have found that upon entering an office, people behave more competitively when they see a sharp leather briefcase on the desk, they talk more softly when there is a picture of a library on the wall, and they keep their desk tidier when there is a vague scent of cleaning agent in the air. But none of them are ...

The New-Moon Total Solar Eclipse of July 11

A Total Solar Eclipse on a new moon is rare, of course occuring when the Moon is directly between the Sun and Earth....that is, they are aligned near the ecliptic (the plane of the earth's orbit around the sun and the apparent annual path of the sun). During a total solar eclipse, the Moon completely obscures the Sun over a relatively narrow band across the Earth's surface, its shadow racing generally eastward. The last time there was a solar eclipse at this same degree of Cancer was in 1991; the next one will be in 2029.

There are two kinds of solar eclipses. North nodal eclipses have a personal orientation and symbolize personal identity, ego and the physical body. South nodal eclipses are other-oriented and symbolize a spouse or significant other, relationships and new perspectives based on interaction with others. This is a south nodal eclipse, suggesting that we are being called to use previously learned skills and talents in new ways and that the opportunities to do so will come through our relationships.

The New Moon at 19 24" Cancer is a solar eclipse, always good for drawing attention to any and all issues of the sign involved. This time around we will be getting a refresher course on all things related to the fourth house and Cancer. Home, family, our mothers, our "roots", those who share our homes, our ancestors and the dwelling we live in.

The solar eclipse on July 11 is a total eclipse, which crosses the South Pacific Ocean where it makes no landfall except for Mangaia (Cook Islands), Easter Island (Isla de Pascua) and several isolated atolls. The path of totality ends just after reaching southern Chile and Argentina. The Moon's penumbral shadow produces a partial eclipse visible from a much larger region covering the South Pacific and southern South America.

George's Star

Uranus was originally called George's Star.

When Sir William Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781, he was given the honor of naming it. He chose to name it Georgium Sidus (George's Star) after his new patron, King George III (Mad King George).
