How is Halloween astronomically significant? The answer is that it falls halfway between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice, on the last of the four Cross Quarter days of the Solar Calendar. A Cross Quarter day is a day midway between an Equinox and a Solstice. For pre-Christian Celts and traditional Japanese Shinto societies, Equinoxes and Solstices signaled the midpoints of the seasons while Cross-Quarter days marked their beginnings. This contrasts with our own calendar where each season begins with an Equinox or Solstice. Nevertheless, vestiges of ancient celebrations tied to seasonal transitions remain in that each Cross Quarter day continues to be associated with a holiday: Groundhog Day (February 2), May Day (May 1), Lammas Day (August 1) and, of course, Halloween/Samhain (October 31) or, in Mexico and some other Spanish speaking countries, Los Dias de los Muertos (the Days of the Dead), which takes place in late October or early November.
The ancient Celts simplified this seasonal transition by establishing two halves to their calendar: Light and Dark. Samhain marked the seam between light and dark in both agricultural and philosophical terms.
Our ancestors knew the potential for transformation was ripe at this pivotal point in astronomical time. Samhain is a gateway into incredible metamorphosis and the position of Pleiades during this time is optimal for creating astronomical change in our lives. It is a time of descent into dark realms which are represented by the upcoming winter months. Illumination is granted to the persistent! Halloween...history has it that the modern holiday featuring ghouls and goblins going from door to door with an extortion scheme featuring "tricks or treats" is actually a merger of customs arising from both pagan and Christian traditions. According to most compilers of Halloween history, the holiday actually originated in the ancient Celtic ritual of Samhain that marked the completion of the final harvest.
The festival of Samhain dates back to the 5th century B.C. In Ireland, October 31 was the date that marked the official "end of summer" and the beginning of the new year based on the natural cycles of the earth. The folk belief was that this was the time of year when the "veil between the worlds" (the earth and the otherworld) was the thinnest and most easily penetrated. On Halloween, history has it that the laws of space and time were temporarily suspended, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living. The Celts would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess, or so they claimed.
The word Halloween, history tells, actually came from the Roman Catholic Church as a contraction of the "All Hallows Eve". Occurring simultaneously with Samhain, the eve of "All Hallows Day, also known as "All Souls (or Saints) Day", was celebrated in remembrance of the Saints and other beloved departed on the first of November.
One example (and there are many) of the merger of pagan and Christian practices was the practice of "trick or treating". In the Christian tradition, beggars were allowed to come to the doors and ask for "All-Souls Cakes" (currant-filled biscuits or scones). In return they promised to pay by saying prayers for the recently deceased of the household. If the household was stingy, vandalism was to be expected.
In the pagan tradition, gifts of food and drink were left on the doorstep to "feed" the wandering spirits and prevent their coming into the house looking for food.
Some argue that Halloween, which originated as a pagan harvest festival is a satanic holiday. However, paganism and satanism are not the same thing. Ask the Roman Catholic Church...
