"Augmented Aerial Earth" Real Time Google Video Surveillance

Researchers from Georgia Tech have devised methods to take real-time, real-world information and layer it onto Google Earth, adding dynamic information to the previously sterile Googlescape. They use live video feeds (sometimes from many angles) to find the position and motion of various objects, which they then combine with behavioral simulations to produce real-time animations for Google Earth or Microsoft Virtual Earth. They use motion capture data to help their animated humans move realistically, and were able to extrapolate cars' motion throughout an entire stretch of road from just a few spotty camera angles.

Each year in October as the Earth orbits about the Sun, it passes through an area of Space containing dust and rock fragments left behind by Halley’s Comet. As these particles hit the Earth’s atmosphere they burn up, producing streaks of light we can see in the night sky, which we call meteors or shooting stars. The next meteor shower is the Orionids on October 21, 2009. The best viewing will be in the hours before dawn on October 21 (The range of dates is expected as October 16th – 27th). Because of the location of the Halley’s Comet debris in space, the meteors appear to us on the Earth’s surface to originate from the constellation of Orion. However, this is nothing more than a “line of sight” effect. The rock fragments which cause the meteors are actually very close to Earth – they have nothing to do with the distant star pattern we call Orion. |
