Kentucky Republicans say Jefferson Davis statue should go
From: kentucky.com

When Kentuckians erected statues honoring two of their state's most historic figures, they put former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in the center of the state's Capitol rotunda. They put his Confederate counterpart, Jefferson Davis, in the corner.

The two massive sculptures evoke Kentucky's complicated racial history as a state that never officially joined the Confederacy but did host a shadow Confederate government and supplied many soldiers for the South during the Civil War.

Now, nearly 80 years after then-Democratic Gov. Happy Chandler unveiled the statue of "patriot, hero, statesman" Davis, some prominent Kentucky officials are suggesting the Davis statue should be removed. The proposal — which has been raised before, without success — was revived by the shooting deaths of nine black people in a South Carolina church last week. A rambling, online diatribe professing allegiance to white supremacy and displaying the Confederate battle flag has been linked to the suspect in the killings, 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof. The shootings have also spurred new calls to remove Confederate flags that have official roles in South Carolina and Mississippi.

Republican Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers said Tuesday he now favors removing the statue. So does Matt Bevin, the GOP nominee for governor, and Mitch McConnell, the Republican majority leader of the U.S. Senate.

New Orleans - Pastor wants Jefferson Davis memorial taken down
From: wwltv.com

Is it time for New Orleans to reconsider its Confederate monuments and symbols? It is a question Mayor Mitch Landrieu and other city leaders are now considering as one local pastor calls for the Jefferson Davis memorial to be taken down.

Just feet from one of the most diverse churches in the city sits the statue of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America.

"It is not something that unites us. It is not something to be celebrated," said Shawn Anglim, the pastor at First Grace United Methodist Church. "It is something that divides us."

The First Grace United Methodist Church bridged the racial divide when it merged a historically black church and an all-white church into one congregation after Hurricane Katrina.

Now Anglim, the pastor who united the two congregations, is making a statement of his own at the busy Mid-City corner of Canal Street and Jefferson Davis Parkway.

At the front of the church, a sign proudly reads 'black lives matter' and 'take down the Jeff Davis monument'.

"A private memorial like this on city property is not acceptable," Anglim said.

Anglim said Mayor Mitch Landrieu's decision to have the tricentennial committee look at all the confederate monuments and symbols in the city, including the Robert E. Lee monument and the statue of confederate Gen. G. T. Beauregard at City Park, is not enough.

"We need a concrete act and a symbolic act that tells us who we are going forward, and Mayor Landrieu has the opportunity and character to do that," says Anglim.

Anglim is calling for the mayor to remove the Jefferson Davis statue on Independence Day.

"I would like New Orleans to be a place where we can have an honest, civil discussion about those kinds of things and let the people of New Orleans decide what they want the future to look like," Landrieu said.

"I am strongly committed to a robust discussion about having monuments in our city that reflect our culture, our history that we can be proud of," said Councilman Jason Williams.

Thomas Jefferson Memorial to be Removed?
From: wwltv.com

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial, which has stood near the banks of the Potomac River in Washington for more than 70 years, is a classical tribute to the author of the Declaration of Independence and the third U.S. president.

This week, the Jefferson Memorial was drawn into the national debate about race following the shooting deaths of nine people in a predominantly black church in South Carolina last week. It joins other public statues depicting Southern or Confederate figures, including Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, that some are arguing represent the country’s racist past and should be removed.

CNN anchor Ashleigh Banfield this week questioned whether the Jefferson Memorial should be taken down because Jefferson owned slaves. “There is a monument to him in the capital city of the United States. No one ever asks for that to come down,” Banfield said.

Online petition pushing for removal of Monument Avenue statues
From: wric.com

Richmond, Va. - Stemming from a national debate over the Confederate flag and whether it should be shown in public there is now an online push to have monuments of Confederate leaders removed from Richmond’s streets.

Stemming from a national debate over the Confederate flag and whether it should be shown in public there is now an online push to have monuments of Confederate leaders removed from Richmond’s streets.

The petition was started Tuesday on MoveOn.org and has close to 400 signatures. It calls on state lawmakers to have monuments of Confederate leaders removed from Monument Avenue and accuses the statues of being a form of subliminal and institutional racism.

“It’s probably very unrealistic to go and take them all down, I don’t really see that the city or the residents of the city would probably be very supportive of that but I do think that it represents something that isn’t very nice that’s kind of a dark part of our history,” said Richmond resident Tara Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick says she agrees with the petition and doesn’t think changes should stop there. She says school names or mascots that honor the Confederacy should also be changed.

“Highway name might be more difficult, taking down the monuments is something that’s more difficult but I think the things that are easy to change should be changed and it’s been a long time coming,” said Fitzpatrick.

SD lawmaker wants to rename Robert E. Lee Elementary School
From: fox5sandiego.com

A lawmaker called Tuesday on the San Diego Unified School District to change the name of Robert E. Lee Elementary School because of the namesake’s ties to the Confederacy.

Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, sent a letter to SDUSD Superintendent Cindy Marten that referred to the shooting deaths of the pastor and eight parishioners of a historic black church in Charleston. The school district did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the issue.

The attack is being investigated as a hate crime. The 21-year-old accused gunman, who is white, had posed with a Confederate flag in photos posted online.

South Carolina’s governor has since called for the Confederate flag to be removed from the statehouse.

“The flag in particular, and anyone associated with this army, in general, have been associated with intolerance, racism and hate, none of which have a place in our schools,” Gonzalez wrote.

“It is also important to note that the area in which the elementary school is located is truly representative of South San Diego — a vibrant, multiethnic community with a strong African-American presence that deserves a school named after someone we can all admire,” her letter says. “Robert E. Lee is not that person.”

Memphis, Tenn. - Mayor Wharton: Remove Nathan Bedford Forrest statue and body from park
From: wreg.com

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Mayor A C Wharton says he thinks a statue of Confederate Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest should be removed from a city park.

Mayor Wharton joins a growing number of voices calling for the complete removal of all traces of Forrest from the park.

In an emailed statement to The Associated Press late Wednesday, Wharton said he would like to see the statue removed from Health Sciences Park and “returned to Forrest Monument Association that had it placed there.”

Wharton said the graves of Forrest and his wife, which are in the park, should be relocated to Elmwood Cemetery. Elmwood was the original location of the graves, until 1904, when the park was created and the statue erected.

Wednesday, City Council member Myron Lowery told us, “This is a time gone by; a time passed. A time that, yes, is historical in our city but it’s not a time to be honored.”

Lee Millar with the Sons of Confederate Veterans strongly opposes the move, “He was a city councilman, an alderman for two terms, and helped rebuild the city after the war.”

TN Democrats: Remove Nathan Bedford Forrest bust from TN Capitol
From: jacksonsun.com

The bust of a Confederate general and leading figure in the founding of the Ku Klux Klan should be removed from the Tennessee statehouse, top Tennessee Democrats said Monday.

U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., and state House Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh, D-Ripley, said the bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest has no place in the Tennessee statehouse.

"Symbols of hate should not be promoted by government. South Carolina should remove the Confederate battle flag from its Capitol, and Tennessee should remove the bust of Forrest inside our Capitol," Cooper said in a statement to The Tennessean.

Fitzhugh said he believes the bust should be displayed in a museum.

"In general our Capitol should be representative of the people of Tennessee. Right now if you're a young girl, like my granddaughter, Marley Mac, for instance, and you visit the Capitol, there are no busts in the building that look like you," Fitzhugh said.

"For African-Americans, there's only one — a fairly recent addition. So I think, generally speaking, we need to revisit what we have displayed in the Capitol so that it better represents a Tennessee for all of us."

The statements come as the nation debates whether South Carolina should remove the Confederate battle flag flying at its statehouse in the wake of apparently racially motivated murders.

Liberals: Help us map the last remaining monuments of the Confederacy
From: jacksonsun.com

With more and more politicians condemning the Confederate battle flag, we probably won’t see that lasting image of American racial strife being flown on the state capitol grounds in Columbia, South Carolina, for much longer.

Once the flag is down, maybe the state can take a look at the University of South Carolina—specifically, the Wade Hampton residence hall. The building is named after a former Civil War general, governor, and senator, whose Red Shirts supporters terrorized black South Carolinians to keep them from voting.

Also check out the multiple South Carolina high schools, cities, and roads named in his honor.
