While artists are often known for eccentricity, one Norwegian conceptual artist may have raised the bar, competing with Vincent Van Gogh’s ear slicing incident.

25-year-old Alexander Selvik Wengshoel was born with a deformed hip, spending years in a wheelchair or on crutches, The Local reports.

Undergoing a hip replacement surgery at age 21, he convinced doctors to allow him to keep the bone they removed, flesh still attached, for an exhibition he would display at the Tromso Academy of Art.

Attempting to remove the flesh, Wengshoel boiled the bone, and that’s when he got a harebrained idea.

“I had to boil off the meat to get to the bone, and when I started scraping off the meat, I took a little piece and thought, ‘Why not do it?’” Wengshoel told The Local. “It’s not every day I will have a piece of human flesh which is mine and which it is possible to eat. So I had a little taste, and then I thought, ‘That’s really nice.’”

Wengshoel liked the taste so much that he decided to make a meal of it, serving a side of his own cooked flesh with potato gratin and a glass of wine.
