Putin is a charismatic character with a larger-than-life pop culture image, and his political maneuvering was instrumental in the de-escalation of the recent Syria standoff which could have intensified into a WWIII scenario.

Peace Prizes to War Mongers

However, a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize to a former KGB officer and President whose leadership is described as a dictatorship by critics, a "long process of regression [that] culminated in a move from a hybrid to an authoritarian regime", and "a mafia state" is a surprising and questionable proposal. The list of journalists and whistle-blowers silenced or killed under Putin’s rule is long and alarming, and while Russia has grown economically robust over the last decade, calls of rampant corruption continue.

Many suggest the Nobel Peace Prize has lost relevance or even legitimacy due to recent recipients, most notably Barack Obama in 2009 and the European Union in 2012.

It’s been noted with wry dismay by many outlets that "it was Barack Obama – the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner – who Putin had to dissuade from bombing Syria." Source

Lord Truscott’s nomination is largely a symbolic gesture, as the Nobel Peace Prize has already been awarded to The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the body responsible for destroying stockpiles of chemical weapons in Syria. But insiders recognize the Putin nomination as a ’sophisticated nod’.

Of the nomination, it’s reported:
[...]American-German political analyst F William Engdahl describes the move as a "political dodge" by the Oslo Nobel Peace Prize Committee. Putin should have won for "giving Obama an escape route" out of what could have become "World War III", he told the newspaper. Engdahl describes the Nobel committee as "very much a political body" and "very much connected to the Nato agenda both in the civilian side and military side". He adds: "If you look at the pattern of the awarding of the Peace Prize – actually, over several decades – you’ll get a very strong impression that it’s underscoring a certain Western agenda, globalist agenda if you will."

UK Lord nominates Putin for Nobel Peace Prize over Syria plan
From: RT

Lord Truscott, a member of the UK’s House of Lords, has nominated President Vladimir Putin for the Nobel Peace Prize for his plan to scrap Syrian chemical weapons. This prevented the escalation of the conflict and will “save thousands of lives”.

On Tuesday morning, Lord Peter Truscott submitted the nomination to the Nobel Committee. He believes Putin deserves a prize for his role in the initiative to eliminate the Syrian chemical weapons arsenal, which helped to prevent the “civil war escalating to a fully international crisis”.

“I looked at what President Putin did at the G20, where he took [US] President Obama aside and gave this initiative a real push,” the British MP told Voice of Russia radio.

The impact of this initiative, the lawmaker believes, will be “quite profound on a number of levels”. It will save thousands of lives in Syria and internationally as well as “provide a model to diffuse other international crises,” including the dispute over Iran’s controversial nuclear program, he explained.

Awarding the Nobel Prize to Putin could become Russia’s reward for its efforts on Syria. Since the Cold War, the country has felt marginalized in the international arena, Lord Truscott said.

“Now it has taken center stage, a constructive stance, and I think Russia should be rewarded."
