Hack the Planet Now! - Britain’s Senior Scientist Pushes for GeoEngineering

Lord Rees, one of "Britain’s most senior scientists", has suggested that time is running out on earth’s climate, and that unless we take drastic measures like geoengineering, global warming will lead us into ’dangerous territory’ and ’panic’.
It would seem that the only one panicking is Lord Rees. His alarmist statements fly in the face of current mainstream theories that if man made global warming exists at all, it’s ’on pause’, and we’re in a period of cooling (despite rising CO2 levels and predictions to the contrary).
Amusingly, this research is found in the very same online publication.
From The Telegraph (dated Sept. 8, 2013): "Global warming? No, actually we’re cooling, claim scientists"
A leaked report to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) seen by the Mail on Sunday, has led some scientists to claim that the world is heading for a period of cooling that will not end until the middle of this century.
If correct, it would contradict computer forecasts of imminent catastrophic warming. The news comes several years after the BBC predicted that the arctic would be ice-free by 2013.
Not only this, but scientists don’t necessarily agree with a rush to geoenginneering as any kind of solution to earth’s ever-changing climate. Such schemes may end up damaging our environment and doing more harm than good.
Further, Lord Rees’ pessimism about reducing carbon dioxide emissions is growing irrelevant, as more research is coming out suggesting that climate change may not be caused by carbon dioxide levels at all.
As shown here: Global warming caused by CFCs, not carbon dioxide, new study says
and here : Carbon Dioxide Levels Continue To Rise, But Global Temperatures Are Not Following Suit
As one of Britain’s leading scientists, Lord Rees should probably keep abreast of the latest scientific findings. And if he’s aware of these findings and is still pushing for quick and drastic ’climate-hacking’ measures, one could question his motivations.
From The Telegraph:
‘Hack the planet to counter climate change,’ says Lord Rees
By Hayley Dixon | The Telegraph
Hacking the planet’s climate could buy the world time to develop cleaner sources of energy to counter global warming, one of Britain’s most senior scientists has claimed.
The Astronomer Royal, Lord Rees is set to say that he is pessimistic that global carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced to safe levels within the next 20 years.
Lord Rees, the Astronomer Royal, claims that launching mirrors into space, triggering algal blooms in the oceans and seeding clouds are just some of "Plan B" schemes which will have to be considered by world leaders unless carbon emissions can be cut in the next 20 years.
He is due to tell the British Scientist Festival in Newcastle that although it is an “utter political nightmare” because “not all nations would want to adjust the thermostat the same way “, hacking the planet through geoengineering will have to be discussed, the Guardian reported.
Lord Rees is set to say that he is pessimistic that global carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced to safe levels within the next 20 years, meaning that by the end of the century gas concentrations in the atmosphere will rise above 500 parts per million (ppm).
This could trigger a 6C rise in average temperature and the melting of the ice caps which in turn could accelerate climate change, it is believed.
"If the effect is strong, and the world consequently seems on a rapidly warming trajectory into dangerous territory, there may be a pressure for ’panic measures’," he will say.
"These would have to involve a ’Plan B’ - being fatalistic about continuing dependence on fossil fuels, but combating its effects by some form of geoengineering."
Plan B could including putting mirrors in space to reflect sunlight away from the Earth, encouraging the growth of carbon dioxide consuming algae by fertilising the oceans with iron, and seeding clouds in the upper layer of the Earth’s atmosphere to bounce some of the sun’s energy back into the stratosphere.
But alongside the political issues there could be unintended side effects to the plans, Lord Rees warns, and if the measures were ever halted climate change could return with a vengeance.
