4chan ’False Flag’ Conspiracy Theory Predicted Boston Marathon Bombing Arrest
2013 04 25

There is much debate surrounding the idea that ’the internet’ got involved in trying to identify potential Boston bombing suspects via social media. Many networking sites, such as Reddit and 4chan, had members sorting through the glut of visual evidence gathered that day. This ’democratization’ of evidence has been recently spurned in the mainstream media, with suggestions for a return to a sober, discerning, more ’traditional investigative reporting’. But with the growing distrust of authority and their ’official investigations’ seen as incomplete at best or whitewashes at worst, an unofficial and open investigation by outsiders seems to be what many people want.

Truly, these unofficial investigations raise questions about events that the mainstream doesn’t address because they follow lines of inquiry cut off by police, government and FBI. At the same time, crowd-driven sleuthing can result in a witch-hunt, and innocent people can be wrongly accused. A balance must be achieved.

What frustrated many regarding the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing was that the FBI specifically requested assistance from the public in identifying them (even though it was reported the FBI had the information already on file), and when the public came back with suspects and anomalies related to the case, they were shot down and told to ONLY focus on what the FBI was concluding.

Also, officials have been evasive about the military contractors at the marathon that day which, a fact proven beyond doubt by photograhic evidence, nor have they addressed the drills that witnesses reported.

While not all leads or accusations are correct in the online analysis, the earnest drive to get to the truth is what causes alternative information sites to flourish, in a time when government agencies are involved in foiling their own terror plots, and mainstream media is no longer doing its job.

Over the past four days, the anonymous 4chan message boards have seen a seemingly endless stream of photographs of possible "suspects," news items and tips, but one post in particular refuses to go away.

The item in question was posted at 6:42 p.m. EDT Monday, within hours of the attacks, along with a well-known press photo of the one of the explosion sites, and it lays out a detailed series of predictions about how the federal investigation into the attacks will proceed, and what the anonymous poster believes will happen once it concludes.

The poster, who claims to work "on a security commission," provides specifics about whom he the thinks authorities will arrest, writing that "they’re going to try to pin this event on a male late teens to early 20s and say he did it because he’s unstable," and that "they won’t find the suspect til later this week and the raid is supposed to occur on Friday."
